The Royal Wedding of William and Kate - A party like no other

Champagne is flowing outside of Westminster Cathedral in the early morning before WIliam and Kate wed.

Ten years ago Andy and I had the pleasure of photographing the Royal Wedding of Royal Weddings. The marriage of William and Kate. We signed up for a documentary course lead by renowned documentary photographer Jocelyn Bain Hogg. It was ran as part of the Sony World Photography Awards and we would each get one image selected to be displayed at the exhibition in Somerset house, London.

Plans being finalised for one of the biggest parties the city of London would see.

The brief was simple, go out into the streets and capture the atmosphere. Do not focus on the wedding itself, but the life around it.

As the footpaths start to fill, the empty roads are dotted with Policeman - making sure the Royal procession will pass without a hitch.

Friends dance through the streets after the wedding party passed through.

Let’s be honest, in Ireland we know how to drink, but we will never match the English when it comes to street parties. Everyone gets involved, from grannies to babies. Dressing up as ludicrously as possible is part of the fun. I never experienced such a public display of happiness for two young people.  

From early in the morning bottles of Champagne were being popped and Pimms and Procesco was being drunk like water. This lasted all day. The happiness for these two young people was evident all the way along the packed streets, inside every pub, along residential roads and in every park throughout the city. It was a celebration like no other and one I am so happy I got to experience.

A group of Spanish students who were taking a intertwined in each other while taking a nap in the middle of a festival like Hyde Park. I guess the Spanish may also need to learn how to party like the English!
