Faces of Galway 48/100

Meet Peter from Turloughmore.

I met Peter in Dangan; he was working as a physical injury therapist during the NUIG Fresher's Week football matches. Peter likes to mix up his work week with work in, and out, of the office. He is often seen on the sidelines for the Galway Senior Gaelic team. In his office based in Ballybane (website here), he works a lot with endurance athletes and Olympians. He has found that solo athletics always take more precaution with their training and approach physio at the first sign of weakness rather then when the problem has caused injury. As a solo athlete himself he understands how hard it is not to have a team to carry you through.

Peter has always been involved in sport and rowed for the Galway Rowing team for a number of years. After taking part in a few different races he realised that his passion was in adventure racing. In 2011 he came second in the "Jog in the Bog' race and it opened up a whole new world for him. Peter decided that he would take part in more races which where physically challenging, located in difficult terrains and were also self supported.

As part of his training for his next big challenge, "The Race", Peter is running the Dublin marathon. He also spent last Sunday night racing around Maam Turks in the dark, during which he managed to fall into a bog drain! This race involves 15km of kayaking, 166km of cycling, 5km of mountain running and 64km of road and trail running, all in 24 hours. this is a completely unsupported endurance run in the North West of Donegal. Peter loves these events and is constantly looking for the next big challenge. Next May he is running the Coast to Coast 309Km Adventure Race, and he already he has his eye on a few more challenges.
