Meet Rebecca from Blackrock, Dublin.
It's only a job. This is how Rebecca describes her role as an actress. Currently starring in "Helen and I', which has just finished in the Druid, Rebecca is getting much acclaim from the critics. Meeting her on the street Rebecca happily sits on the ground for a photo. Which in a sense sums her up. She is one of the most grounded people I have ever met. Rebecca has travelled the world; studied and worked in London for years but she decided to move back to Dublin four years ago. It was where she felt she needed to be. She loves being home. Even though she has missed her family and partner over the last four weeks, she has felt very welcomed in Galway and loves the charm of the city.
When Rebecca speaks about being an actress there is a strong "other-worldly" sense to how she approaches her roles. She sees herself as a vessel which the characters can come to life in. It is almost as if she can separate Rebecca the lady from Dublin, from Rebecca the actress. When she describes her role as Lynn in "Helen and I" there is an intensity and almost frightening control which Lynn has over Rebecca. A few hours before she takes the stage she can feel "Lynn" starting to take over; her characteristics, mannerisms and personality comes to the forefront. It comes with such intensity it feels like Lynn is desperate to get out.
While this makes for excellent performance it is not always that pleasant, especially if the role you are playing is a dark character. She has learnt a few tips from some of her stage friends, to help her release the character at the end of the night. This helps.
In contrary to this level of acting Rebecca is very proud of the fact that she is the voice of Caitlin in Thomas the Tank engine! This is a woman who has her priorities right!
