2020 - a year in review - part one

Looking back over the past 12 months is like looking back over a number of alternate years. Covid 19 changed the face of our world and in its own way changed the way Wonky Eye Photography adapted and even, grew.

My maternity leave was finishing the week lockdown was first enforced. All booked work was cancelled and I realised that all plans for 2020 were slowly crumbling. With no idea of how the year would go, I reverted to the photography I love and started a small black and white documentary series within my 2km restricted area.

Inspired by my sister (who lives within the 2km) calling by the house one evening and talking to my 6 month old son through the front window. I was saddened to think that this could be life. How many families could only interact from behind a frame of glass. Looking Out was formed and I set about documenting these meetings and occasions.

My plan was to create a black and white sequence with each image capturing both inside the window and the reflection of the world outside. Technically this was a tricky task but I quickly learnt to use my body to cast shadows on the glass to capture the inside world while still allowing the reflection of outside to be obvious. These are all one image - no duplications occurred and the only editing involved was the usual finessing of basic adjustments.

I decided to keep the project small and after capturing a range of scenes I stopped “Looking Out” as the 2 km restrictions were lifted to 5 kms. Images included kids missing school and friends, families celebrating birthdays alone, businesses adapting to the drastically changing landscape and our local priest saying mass in an empty church.
