Faces of Galway 84/100

Meet Colm from Knocknacarra.

Growing up in Knocknacarra Colm spent most of his free time playing football with his brothers. As a strong defender it wasn't long before he was noticed on a national level and in 2010 was called up to the Ireland Under 15 Squad. He also made the Irish School Boys team and the Ireland under 17 and Under 19 squads. By the age of 16 he was playing with Salthill Devon, alongside his older brother Daryl, who now plays for Preston North End FC. He was then signed by Galway United FC at the age of 19. In terms of footballing heroes Colm would like to play in a similar style to Pablo Zabaleta.

Despite a successful start to a football career Colm has his feet firmly planted on the ground. He quickly realised that unless he gets an opportunity to play outside of the country he will struggle to get any financial stability from being a professional footballer in Ireland. So after his Leaving Cert. Colm went straight to NUIG to study a degree in Economics. Even though he is now a full time professional footballer he is still considering completing a Masters in Economics next year.

At the age of 22 Colm is already the captain for the Galway United FC team. His calm demeanour and leadership skills got him noticed by the manager, Shane Keegan, before Shane had even joined the club. Colm regards the role with great pride. He is delighted to be leading out the Galway United team tonight as they start their League Campaign at home against Drogheda United. His hope for this season is to have a successful league place and his dream would be to get his team to the FAI Senior Cup Final in Aviva. If you would like to see Colm in action why don't you check out the Galway United FC website here for upcoming fixtures.
