Meet Kelvin from Leitrim

When I arranged to meet Kelvin I knew he had won the BOI Commercial Photographer Of The Year 2016 and, the IPPA Best Overall Landscape Image of the Year 2015. I had also heard he was a very nice guy. For some reason I envisioned a man in his fifties wearing a golf jumper. I couldn't have been more wrong about his appearance but everyone was right about his character.

It should be hard to photograph a photographer; especially an award winning one who is a judge for the IPPA. It wasn't. Kelvin was the most chilled out and approachable "model" I've encountered. By his very nature he is supportive of every photographer he meets and works with, regardless of their experience or skill. His enthusiasm for photography extends to every topic of discussion; travel, music and Leitrim!

Growing up in a quiet corner of rural Leitrim, Kelvin grew up spending his days fishing or running around with one of his dad's camera. This solitary bliss has carried into his photography career where he is happiest photographing buildings, either from the street view or by hanging out of a helicopter. Architectural photography is his passion.  Kelvin stumbled into photography. He moved to Galway to study Hospitality in GMIT and realised quickly it wasn't for him. He then went on to do a course in editing. Before he knew it he was working with Neil Warner and a life of photography followed.

Kelvin's other passion in life in one that I was very aware of but hadn't made the connection. Any Galway person who has listened to live music in the Kings Head since the late nineties will have heard of Kif. A rock band who play pubs, weddings and corporate events with the same energy. kelvin is the drummer. I can still remember Otherside being belted out on many a Thursday night during my uni days. Thank you Kelvin for bringing us all closer to the red hot chilli peppers!
