Meet Garrett from Limerick

From architectural technician, award winning press photographer, stay at home dad and angiographer; Garrett has had a varied and interested life so far.

After school Garrett headed to L.I.T to become an architectural technician. He was interested in the creative side of the job; drawing the sketches using pen and ink. However the 1980's economic crash happened and work was hard to find as no new buildings were being planned. In his spare time he developed an interest in photography and a friend of his recommended he submit his photos to Press 22, one of Limerick's leading photography agencies. Working as a freelance photographer suited Garrett. He was out and about covering press stories for papers like the Irish Independent, The Irish Times and the Sunday Business Post. In 1993 one of his images "Trapped" won him the highly coveted "News Image of the Year" at the Press photographer Association of Ireland Awards.

Garrett's wife was offered a job in Galway so they decided to move with their two young children. Garrett quickly adapted to the role as stay-at-home dad, but in a world of stay-at-home mums, he found it difficult to integrate into the community and make friends. After attending mother and baby groups their names quickly changed to parent and baby! But there were very few other dads to mix with. His wife and himself and some other like minded people decided set up a branch of Comhaltas in Knocknacarra to teach irish music and it is celebrating 10 years this year. Garrett quickly made contacts within the Galway traditional music scene and Galway started to feel more like home. He also joined the Galway Camera Club and took over the role as Chairman in 2013.

When the kids started school Garrett noticed an job vacancy at the University Hospital. They needed a photographer so he applied and got the job as a clinical photographer and angiographer specialising in eyes a job he had worked at in Limerick. He really enjoys the work and loves looking after his patients. More recently he is focusing on mobile phone photography and developing an Instagram following where he would like to work with some brands in promoting their product. Why don't you visit his Instagram page heregive him a like and follow him on his next journey.
